India’s data-centre push needs more than server racks

India’s digital infrastructure story has a new planning document. NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub published its Data Centre Evaluation Framework to Help States Plan for Sustainable Growth on 14 October 2026. It addresses how states can weigh infrastructure requirements, economic benefits and sustainability when considering data-centre proposals.

For entrepreneurs, the interesting question extends beyond who will build the largest facility. What reliable products and services will a more demanding infrastructure ecosystem need? The opportunities below are our editorial analysis, not announced procurement programmes or guaranteed contracts.

Look for a measurable operating problem

Cooling performance, equipment maintenance, water monitoring and power quality are examples of operational areas worth investigating with actual customers. A founder should begin by understanding an operator’s current process and the cost of a specific failure, rather than assuming that a large sector automatically creates demand for a new product.

A useful first conversation identifies the person responsible for that problem and the evidence required before changing a supplier. Infrastructure customers may care as much about support, continuity and documentation as they do about a technical specification.

Design for reliability and integration

A monitoring tool that works in isolation may be difficult to adopt inside an operating facility. Ask how it connects with existing systems, what happens if it stops working and who maintains it. Avoid promising that a pilot can replace established controls without the necessary evidence and approvals.

For a hypothetical maintenance service, the differentiator might be a dependable response process and clear records rather than a sophisticated interface. Describe the service in terms the customer can verify: scope, response arrangements, reporting and responsibilities.

Treat resource claims as claims to prove

If a product is marketed as reducing energy or water use, define the baseline and the measurement method. Explain the operating conditions and account for trade-offs. A percentage from one trial should not become a universal promise for every installation.

This discipline also improves a sales proposal. Buyers can compare a transparent test plan with their own requirements, while founders learn whether the product’s benefit survives real operating conditions. Credible evidence can be more persuasive than a dramatic sustainability slogan.

Build the capability around the product

Specialist installation, calibration, training, repair and technical documentation may be important parts of the offer. Identify which capabilities the business can supply itself and which require an experienced partner. Check the qualifications, standards and contractual responsibilities relevant to the specific work.

Smaller firms should also understand the customer’s vendor-onboarding process. A technically capable team can lose time if it has not prepared basic company records, service terms or a clear point of accountability.

Read the framework in the right way

The document is a planning framework for states. It is not evidence that a particular project has been approved or that a startup will receive an incentive. Founders should distinguish a policy signal from an actual customer requirement and verify opportunities individually.

India’s infrastructure ambitions can create space for businesses that solve difficult supporting problems. The practical route is to choose one problem, develop a dependable capability and demonstrate its value with a customer who needs it.
